The concern
Polyester and “microfiber” sheets are made from plastic (PET — the same material as drink bottles). Like synthetic clothing, they shed tiny plastic microfibers through friction during sleep. Because you spend 7–9 hours face-down in bedding, any airborne fibers are in your immediate breathing zone far longer than from clothing. A landmark study in Environmental Science & Technology (De Falco et al., 2018) documented the microfiber release mechanism from polyester textiles, and a 2022 review in Environment International confirmed microplastic fibers in human lung tissue.

Polyester-fill pillows

The concern
Most budget and mid-range pillows are filled with polyester fiberfill — a plastic material that sheds microplastic fibers through compression and friction during sleep. Conventional foam mattress

The concern
Most mattresses use polyurethane or memory foam — a petroleum-based plastic foam — which can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including formaldehyde and toluene, particularly in the first days to weeks after purchase. A 2022 study in Chemosphere measured VOC emissions from memory foam mattresses and found that, at normal bedroom ventilation, levels are unlikely to pose an acute health risk for most adults. However, many mattresses contain added flame retardants (such as TCPP or PentaBDE, now restricted but still present in older mattresses) that are persistent chemicals of concern. People with chemical sensitivities or those buying for children may want to prioritize certified alternatives.

Vinyl / PVC mattress protector
PVC waterproofing contains phthalates, plasticizers linked to hormone disruption.
The concern
Most budget waterproof mattress protectors use a vinyl (PVC) backing to block liquids. PVC is made flexible by adding phthalates, which can make up 30–40% of the material's weight. Because phthalates are not chemically bonded to the plastic, they leach and off-gas over time. Phthalates like DEHP and DBP are classified as endocrine disruptors by the EPA. Exposure concern is highest for children and infants spending 10–12 hours a day directly on PVC-covered crib mattresses.

Plug-in & spray air fresheners

The concern
Air fresheners — plug-ins, sprays, and gel types — work by volatilizing fragrance chemicals into the air. A 2007 NRDC analysis found that 86% of products tested contained phthalates, including some labeled “unscented.” A study in Environmental Health Perspectives found that scented consumer products emit a wide range of VOCs, with nearly half emitting at least one chemical classified as a hazardous air pollutant. Bedroom curtains move with air currents and handling throughout the day and night. Paraffin candles & wax melts
Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct. Burning it indoors releases VOCs and fine particulate matter.
The concern
Paraffin wax, derived from petroleum refining, is the base material for most conventional candles and wax melts. When burned, paraffin candles release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde, as well as fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and ultrafine particles). A 2014 study by Derudi et al. in Environmental Science and Pollution Research directly measured VOC and particulate emissions from candles with different wax compositions, finding that wax quality and composition strongly influenced pollutant output and that scented candles emitted more VOCs than unscented. Burning candles in a closed bedroom — where ventilation is lower than in main living areas — concentrates these emissions around sleeping occupants.

Synthetic rugs & carpet
New synthetic carpet off-gasses VOCs for weeks after installation, including compounds associated with the 'new carpet smell'.
The concern
Synthetic carpets typically use nylon or polyester face fibers bonded to backing materials made from styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). A 2008 study by Katsoyiannis et al. in the Journal of Hazardous Materials tested VOC emissions from multiple carpet types in environmental chambers, finding total VOC (TVOC) concentrations up to 2,300 µg/m³ from carpets with synthetic backing. SBR-backed carpets primarily emit 4-phenylcyclohexene (4-PCH) — the compound responsible for the distinctive “new carpet smell” — as well as styrene. PVC-backed carpets emit formaldehyde, vinyl acetate, and plasticizer compounds. While emissions decrease over weeks to months, the bedroom is a long-exposure environment where lower-level emissions accumulate overnight.
